Every educational institution employs college counselors who counsel students on every matter that may affect their studies. A college counselor is usually a psychologist who is trained in understanding the other party and who can recognize the issues that are disturbing the patient.
A student may face a lot of pressures during his academic tenure. It can come from the peers in acceptance or rejection; parents who pay for his tuition fees; relationships issues; personal barriers like poor results. Hence, a college counselor needs to be able to talk with the student to identify the pressing issues and help him/her resolve those issues so that he/she will be a more confident and healthy individual to carry on with his/her studies.
A college counselor must be a good listener as well as possess good communication skills to encourage the student to open up or to take on the right solutions to overcome his issues. He works in strict confidentiality to the student.
A college counselor may at times need to handle not just study issues but also emotional and spiritual issues which may affect his studies. He needs to be patient and gentle to help the student get back on his feet and mature in his decisions.
