A counselor is an important figure in certain environments such as schools, juvenile centers, prisons, hospitals, healthcare, insurance, rehabs, therapeutic and religious environments.
A counselor is important in counseling and advising people who are not able to function normally emotionally, physically or spiritually. Counselors need to be well trained in his environment of need. A school counselor needs to understand the behavior and rational of students while a prison counselor needs to have discernment about each inmate’s emotional health that may affect his performance.
Hence, every counselor must be well trained with the right knowledge of his wards in that particular environment. He needs to be able to communicate well with his charges applying a good listening ear and gentle words to encourage and promote good and healthy behavior, thoughts, feelings and speech. He must be quick to situation changes and complies with the environment’s requirements to safeguard himself and his charges.
He needs to be able to distinguish work from personal life so that he is not emotionally and personally caught up with the ward. He needs to exercise professionalism during the course of his work.
