An editor is very important in his role to any publishing works. He has the final say on the outcome of the publishing as he edits the piece of reading material carefully and thoroughly. He vets through the contents of the article to determine its authenticity, appeal, relevance and marketability besides checking on its presentation, grammar, sentence construction, tenses and format.
An editor needs to be very good in his language skills. He must be well read to understand the contents of the article he is vetting for publication. He must be experienced to understand the point of view of the author and the reader as well as the market which will impact the sale of the publication.
He also will need to deal with the public, publishers and authors with regards to the publication. He may have to deal with the local publishing authorities to ensure that no vicious or malicious materials are approved for printing.
An editor needs to have integrity and a high sense of responsibility towards society with the types of publications he approves. Hence, he must make time to read and vet all the materials that are to be published.
